More than 50,000 mothers participated, revealing that over 70% found their requests for furlough denied. This alarming trend indicates that a staggering 78% of working mothers were never even offered the furlough option, and 40% were unclear about their eligibility, particularly regarding how school closures influence their ability to work effectively.

The findings from this survey underscore a concerning lack of awareness regarding the furlough program among parents and caregivers. The Government has established provisions specifically for parents unable to work due to increased caregiving responsibilities stemming from the pandemic. This includes the right to request furlough if parental obligations impede their ability to work remotely or necessitate a reduction in hours. Despite these provisions, many working mothers continue to remain uninformed about their entitlements, revealing a significant communication gap and outreach failure from both employers and the Government.

The Furlough Scheme was designed to stave off a wave of layoffs and redundancies triggered by the economic repercussions of the pandemic. Originally scheduled to conclude in April 2021, it has been extended multiple times to address the ongoing challenges faced by employees, particularly those managing childcare due to school closures. However, the TUC cautions that many working mothers are not taking advantage of this support due to a lack of information concerning furlough options available to them. This situation emphasizes the need for proactive measures to enhance awareness and utilization of this crucial assistance.

Given the persistent challenges, the survey indicated that nearly all respondents reported heightened anxiety levels during the lockdown, with 90% experiencing increased stress. Almost half expressed concerns that their parental status could lead to workplace penalties due to their childcare responsibilities. Many working mothers have resorted to utilizing their annual leave to manage childcare duties, while others have reduced their working hours or even taken unpaid leave. The financial repercussions of stepping back from work have left nearly half of the respondents feeling anxious about their family’s financial stability.

In light of these urgent issues, the TUC is advocating for improved protections for working mothers and others unable to work due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus. They are calling for the right to furlough to be extended to various groups, including those who are shielding and considered clinically vulnerable. Furthermore, the TUC underscores the necessity for employers to consider alternative solutions before resorting to furlough, such as adjusting working hours, providing paid leave, or enabling remote work options.
